A chemiluminescence (CL) detection method for the determination of sulfite is described. The light produced in the reac-tion of Ru(bipy)3 2+ (bipy=2,2˘bipyridyl)-SO3 2- -K2S2O8 is detected. The concentration of sulfite is proportional to the CL intensity in the range 1.5´±0 -7 - 1.0´±0 -4 mol/l. The limit of detection is 4.1´±0 -8 mol/l and the relative standard devia-tion is 4.3% for 2´±0 -5 mol/l sulfite solution in 9 repeated measurements. This method has been successfully applied to the determination of sulfite in sugar and sulfur dioxide in air by using triethanolamine (TEA) as the absorbent material.
